What you missed from FIFA's Friday news dump
For premium subscribers: World football's governing body ignored their own human rights sub-committee on Qatar, then published a 'whitewash' report on the Saudi bid
In the world of 24-hour news and social media, the Friday News Dump is much less of a thing than it was when newspaper deadlines defined what people would read the next morning.
That said, there are still times you can get away with sneaking some bad news out, and late on a Friday night is about as good as any.
For FIFA, based in Switzerland and functioning on Central European Time, midnight on a Friday does slightly expose you in the American market as it is only early evening there.
However, if the Friday happens to be the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, then you have yourself a near-perfect cloak of invisibility to sneak out the thing you want as few people as possible to see.
Taking full advantage of the timing, FIFA splurged out a number of documents on Friday night.
Here are the key takeaways from those:
1. FIFA ignores its own human rights report
In March 2023, FIFA’s human rights and social responsibility sub-committee commissioned a report on the legacy of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The report was submitted in December 2023 but only published late on Friday night.
FIFA has ignored its key recommendation.
